Randy Waldrum has stepped down as the head coach of the Super Falcons, which is the Nigeria’s women’s national football team.

The American tactician cited his wife’s deteriorating health as the reason for his resignation. In his resignation letter dated September 12, 2024, Randy Waldrum revealed the challenges he faced in balancing his family life with his coaching duties, this forced him to prioritize his family’s needs over his role with the Super Falcons.

What did Randy Waldrum say about his decision to leave the Super Falcons?

“It’s been a very difficult few weeks following the Olympics, with my wife’s health issues, and the worries that obviously come with that,” the letter stated. After much thought and consideration, I am hereby resigning my position as Head Coach of the Super Falcons. This will allow the NFF ample time to find the next manager to take over this incredible squad.”

The sudden departure of Waldrum leaves the Super Falcons without a head coach, and combined with the vacant position in the men’s senior team, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) now faces the daunting task of finding suitable replacements for both teams.

The NFF will need to act swiftly to ensure continuity and stability for the Super Falcons, who are expected to compete at the highest level in international competitions.

Waldrum will be remembered for guiding Nigeria to the round of 16 at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, where the Super Falcons qualified from a difficult group that included Canada and hosts Australia, who they famously defeated 3-2, they were beaten by England on penalties after 120 minutes.
