The US has accused Russia of funding both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan’s ongoing war, which began in April 2023 amid a failed transition to civilian rule. US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, alleged that Russia supports the warring factions through illicit gold trading and military aid, exacerbating what is now the world’s largest displacement and hunger crisis. Russia has denied these claims, dismissing them as Western propaganda. In November, Moscow vetoed a UN Security Council resolution urging an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian access in Sudan. The US condemned Russia’s actions, linking them to Sudan’s gold mining partnerships with sanctioned Russian entities, which it argues undermine Sudan’s stability. Thomas-Greenfield expressed regret over global inaction on Sudan, marking her final UN address with a plea for continued international focus on the crisis.
