Russia’s military presence in Syria faces uncertainty following the fall of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime. Following Assad’s fall, Russia’s naval base in Tartus and air base at Hmeimim, crucial for operations in the Mediterranean and Africa, are now under the protection of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a coalition of Islamist groups that gained power after Assad’s fall. However, satellite imagery and reports reveal Russia is also preparing to relocate its military assets. Consequently, there has been speculation that Moscow could shift its military assets to Libya. Russian authorities have denied any such move, stating they are negotiating with the HTS. However, analysts suggest logistical challenges and strained relations, the result of past hostilities against the new Syrian authorities, may force Russia to reconsider its presence in Syria. But if Russia secures a permanent base in Libya, it could challenge NATO and disrupt the fragile balance in the war-torn country.
