Stephen Curry shot 0-for-7 from the floor in the Warriors’ historic 144-93 loss to the Grizzlies on Thursday.
It was the first time in his storied career that he played at least 15 minutes and did not record a field goal. The performance also marked his most field goal attempts (seven) and minutes (24) without a make in his 16-year career, per ESPN Stats & Info.
The 51-point loss marked the third biggest in the Curry era and tied for the fourth-worst margin of defeat in Warriors franchise history. The only three bigger defeats came in the 1971-72, 2020-21 and 2023-24 seasons, the last of which being the infamous 52-point loss to the Celtics last season.
The Warriors were understandably rusty on Thursday after a four-day layoff since their last game versus the Mavericks last Sunday. The gap between games was brought about due to the NBA Cup scheduling, keeping many teams away from basketball activities for nearly a week.
After his forgettable night, Curry downplayed the performance as a bump on the road he and his teammates will bounce back from.
“First time for everything, right?” Curry said of his zero-FG night, via ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk. “I never thought that would be a situation or a result of the game. From the very jump they kind of punched us in the mouth. We didn’t have an answer … That was kind of embarrassing.”
“We are better than what we have shown tonight,” he added. “The vibes are way better. It’s nice to say it, but you got to do something about it, and I feel like we can. Just wait and see.”
While Curry admittedly likes “the vibes” around his team, it’s worth noting that the Warriors are 2-9 in their last 11 games after starting the season 12-3. During the 11-game stretch, the Warriors rank 22nd in defense and 27th in both offense and net rating. Most worryingly, they have been outscored by a margin of 9.5 points in their final 11 games.
The Warriors are hopeful that Dennis Schroder, who finished with five points in his debut on Thursday, will be the catalyst that helps the team shake off its recent woes. Golden State (14-12) will next play Minnesota (14-12) in a road game on Saturday night.
