In California, progressives have crafted a poll initiative that requires a wealth tax—a one-time, five-per-cent tax on wealth above a billion {dollars}, earmarked to shore up the state’s health-care system after drastic federal cuts. Wealth inequality is an unlimited concern, particularly amongst Democrats, and taxes on substantial wealth are broadly widespread. But, because the New Yorker workers author Nicholas Lemann studies in “The Battle to Go a Billionaire Tax,” many distinguished Democratic politicians, together with Elizabeth Warren, have declined to assist it publicly. Lemann talks with David Remnick about why this bellwether progressive situation faces such an uphill battle.
