LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is putting together another masterful bowl performance.
After breaking out in last year’s ReliaQuest Bowl against Wisconsin, the junior quarterback had a fantastic start to the 2024 Texas Bowl against Baylor on Tuesday.
Early in the second quarter, Nussmeier threw a perfect deep ball on a 41-yard touchdown to wide receiver Chris Hilton Jr., his second passing touchdown.
At halftime, LSU led 34-17, and Nussmeier was 16-of-21 for 200 yards and three touchdowns.
He began 2024 by making his first career start on Jan. 1 in last season’s ReliaQuest Bowl.
Nussmeier led LSU to a 35-31 comeback win over the Badgers, finishing the game 31-of-45 for 395 yards with three touchdowns and an interception.
He was just as sharp early against Baylor. As well as he’s played in LSU’s last two bowl games, the Tigers are hoping he can lead them to a bigger bowl in 2025.
Nussmeier announced earlier this month that he’ll return in 2025 for his senior season.
With a year of starting experience, Nussmeier will be expected to improve on a so-so 2024.
He led the SEC in completions (313) and attempts (491) while throwing for 3,739 yards (7.6 yards per attempt), 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Nussmeier struggled in LSU’s four regular-season losses, going 109-of-178 (61.4%) for 1,212 yards (6.8 yards per attempt), six touchdowns and six interceptions.
If he plays the way he’s played in his two bowl-game starts next season, LSU could make a lot of noise in 2025.
