When Pingzhu Wan, 77, purchased her condominium on the northeastern tip of Staten Island greater than 40 years in the past, hers was the one Chinese language household among the many 100-odd models within the house advanced. Her neighbors have been largely Italian and Jewish, and the closest Chinese language grocery retailer was throughout the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, in southern Brooklyn. She raised her now-51-year-old daughter on the island from age three. The lady was the one Chinese language baby in her class.

Now, the arrival of recent Chinese language immigrants has considerably modified the composition of Wan’s neighborhood — and that of the island.

“As quickly as a unit opens up in our advanced now, the patrons are Chinese language,” she mentioned in Mandarin. “Most of them come from Brooklyn.”
