Winter is officially here, and along with it the threat of snow and one forecaster, Netweather, has said it could be here sooner rather than later.
Weather experts there say they believe snow could fall on Monday, November 18, and Saturday, November 23 – at either end of next week.
They state that colder weather from the north will gather overhead in London after forming a snow cloud in the Midlands earlier in the day. They say snow could arrive on Monday at about 9pm.
Here is what the Met Office’s long-range forecast predicts for the next few weeks.
Sunday, November 17 to Tuesday, November 26
The Met Office said temperatures will fall and it will definitely be noticeable across the UK.
They state the weather will be “more unsettled and significantly colder” as we head into the weekend, with rain or showers for most regions.
The heaviest and most frequent spells of rain are most likely to fall in the North, where they are likely to turn wintry, especially on the Scottish hills, but perhaps also at lower levels in the far north as colder air digs south.
They added: “The chance of any widespread or disruptive snowfall affecting more populated areas at this stage, however, remains low. Less certainty for the South but even here there is a chance of some more organised rain, and potentially some hill snow. Often windy, with a chance of gales at times, especially in the North and East. Temperatures falling below average and feeling particularly cold in the strong winds.”
Wednesday, November 27 to Wednesday, December 11
They say: “Signals vary in prevailing weather patterns through this period but will likely be more unsettled and colder than during early November for the start of the period. There is a greater chance of more mobile weather patterns, which would see Atlantic systems periodically move across the country. These will bring some wetter and windier interludes followed by drier periods and, with the colder air in situ, a greater risk of some snow, especially for hills of the North.
“A trend towards less mobile weather or more settled conditions is favoured into December, although some wetter and windier interludes remain likely at times. Temperatures also trending closer to average, especially in the South.”
Will it snow in November in London?
While “colder conditions” are anticipated, no snow is expected in November for London.
The Met Office has suggested that, if snow occurs in the UK, it is likely to fall in the North.
