Opposition leaders in the Democratic Republic of Congo are urging nationwide protests against President Felix Tshisekedi’s proposal to reform the constitution. In October, Tshisekedi announced plans to form a commission to explore potential changes, arguing that the 2005 constitution no longer reflects the country’s needs. Critics, however, suspect the move may be aimed at lifting presidential term limits, allowing Tshisekedi to seek re-election despite his current second and final term. Key opposition figures, including former president Joseph Kabila and ex-presidential candidates Martin Fayulu and Moise Katumbi, issued a joint statement calling for demonstrations to block the reforms. While Congo’s presidency has remained silent on the matter, Communications Minister Patrick Muyaya emphasized that the debate should not be politicized, stressing that Tshisekedi has four years left in his term.
