The sky is literally falling down at “Jerry World.” A piece of sheet metal and other debris fell from the roof of AT&T Stadium in Dallas as it was being opened for the team’s “Monday Night Football” game against the Houston Texans.
KDFW’s Sam Gannon posted video on X of the debris after it had landed on the ground near the field-level suites. No injuries were reported and the roof was later closed.
The team released a statement, per Gannon, that read in part that the incident “is being reviewed further and a decision regarding the ability to re-open the roof safely will be made when possible.”
Gannon confirmed with team officials that the roof will remain closed for “Monday Night Football.”
The unexpected episode follows days of revamped fan and player criticism of the stadium’s design following Dallas’ 34-6 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 10.
Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb told reporters following the game that he was in favor of curtains for the stadium windows which let in a generous amount of sunlight during late afternoon games.
Lamb dropped what looked like a sure touchdown during the loss because he “couldn’t see” the ball in the blinding sunlight.
Team owner Jerry Jones has repeatedly fought off questions about the sun and AT&T Stadium’s architecture since then.
“Well let’s tear the damn stadium down and build another one? Are you kidding me?” he told reporters exasperated and sarcastically. “Everybody has got the same thing. Every team that comes in here has the same issues.”
It should be noted that AT&T Stadium added curtains to block out sunlight for the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson boxing match on Friday.
