Germany’s migration agreements commissioner, Joachim Stamp, has suggested that facilities in Rwanda, funded by the UK for a scrapped deportation plan, could be used by Germany to process asylum seekers. Stamp’s statement reflects discussions in Germany. However, these discussions differ significantly from the UK’s scrapped plan. According to the German ambassador to the UK, the German government has no plans to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda. However, it is engaging in conversations about whether it can process asylum claims in third countries while complying with international law. Given Olaf Scholz, the German Chancellor, previously expressed skepticism about how such a scheme would work, there is a low chance the proposal will advance. Germany faces pressure to address illegal migration, particularly after the far-right Alternative for Deutschland party’s electoral gains.
