While it was reported last week that head coach Mike McCarthy “is more likely to stay” with the Dallas Cowboys than leave this offseason, the Cowboys’ exclusive negotiating period with McCarthy ends on Tuesday.

For a piece published Monday morning, ESPN’s Todd Archer offered an update on where McCarthy and the Cowboys are in contract talks ahead of the looming deadline.

“McCarthy spoke with owner and general manager Jerry Jones and executive vice president Stephen Jones at least three times last week,” Archer explained. “The initial discussions were about what happened in 2024, going through their normal end-of-season protocol. The other days were about the future and what could change in terms of the Cowboys’ approach to roster building, McCarthy’s approach to offense and McCarthy’s approach to his coaching staff. Since there has been no fallout, the safe assumption is both sides see a track to move forward for 2025 and beyond.”

McCarthy first joined the Cowboys in 2020 and guided the club to 12-5 seasons each year from 2021-23. However, he thus far has notched just one playoff win during his Dallas tenure and is coming off a lame-duck campaign that ended with the Cowboys at 7-10.

While Jones previously accepted some blame for the state of the Dallas roster that endured a noteworthy injury crisis this season, he seemingly hasn’t been willing to give McCarthy the type of financial security the coach is looking for even after Dallas denied the Chicago Bears’ request to interview the 61-year-old.

On Monday, NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated hinted that Jones’ handling of the situation could result in McCarthy officially exploring other options as soon as Wednesday.

“McCarthy’s contract expires Tuesday,” Breer noted. “And I do feel like he’s a bit annoyed that it’s gotten to this point. As he should be.”

McCarthy and Jones could continue negotiations beyond Tuesday’s deadline if the two sides feel they’re close to an agreement. It’s unclear if Jones has any potential replacements in mind in the event that talks go south, but the clock is ticking for him to get a deal done assuming he’s serious about running it back with McCarthy for at least one more season.
