Abuja and New Delhi have committed to enhancing bilateral relations, focusing on defense, trade, and development, during a historic meeting in Abuja between India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Modi’s visit, the first by an Indian leader to Nigeria in 17 years, followed an invitation from Tinubu, who seeks to attract more Indian investment to stimulate Nigeria’s economy and generate employment. The leaders discussed strategic partnerships, highlighting cooperation in defense, energy, technology, and counter-terrorism efforts, including maritime security in the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Guinea. Tinubu praised India’s longstanding support, while Modi emphasized the importance of Nigeria as a key partner in Africa, stating that there are many new possibilities for collaboration. Bilateral trade between both countries reached $14.9 billion in 2022.
