Known as one of the most “inclusive” events in the running calendar, The Big Half is aimed at anyone who fancies trying a half marathon around London’s landmarks.

Organisers say: “Join thousands of other participants in this spectacular half marathon event through the heart of London. Great for novices and experienced participants alike. Come for the finisher’s medal or to celebrate London’s diversity.”

As well as The Big Half, there is also the Big Mile for smaller runners wanting to take part.

“The New Balance Big Relay covers the same course in four legs and the Big Mile is a free, family-friendly event that takes place on the same finishing stretch. “

The annual event is set to take place again in the coming weeks. Here is what we know.

When is The Big Half 2024?

The Big Half takes place on Sunday September 1. It will begin at 08:25 with the Elite Wheelchair race, followed by the Elite Men and Women and the first mass wave at 08:30. Then waves every 10 minutes until 10:00.

It is a chip timed, fully marshalled event with a finisher’s medal at the end of the 13.1 mile course.

What is this year’s route?

The course starts by Tower Bridge. From here, participants will head to Canary Wharf, then come back along the Highway to cross Tower Bridge into the borough of Southwark as they head towards the finish at the iconic Cutty Sark in Greenwich.

Participants are asked to use public transport to reach the starting point as there will be no parking available and a lot of the roads in the surrounding area will be closed for the event. The closest Tube stations are Fenchurch Street and Tower Hill.

Event organisers say an event guide with full details of everything you need will be emailed to those registered ahead of event day, but there’s also information on where your official starting point is depending on the letter given on your bib number. Full details can be found here.
