Walker Buehler found the perfect way to end the 2024 season, and, perhaps, his tenure with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

After starting Game 3 of the World Series just two days prior, Buehler was called upon to close out Game 5. He did just that, striking out two in a perfect ninth inning as the Dodgers became champions.

That may also have been the last pitch he throws for the Dodgers. Buehler is a free agent, with the Dodgers declining to extend the qualifying offer. Ken Rosenthal from The Athletic reported that the Dodgers did not want to hurt his market and force him to accept the offer.

There was a time when the qualifying offer would not have mattered. Buehler was one of the better young pitchers in the game between 2018-21. He was a two-time All-Star, posting a 2.82 ERA and a 0.989 WHiP in his 564 innings, striking out 620 batters with 137 walks.

Buehler could not build on his previous success in 2022, posting roughly league average numbers before undergoing his second Tommy John surgery. He missed the entire 2023 season and part of 2024 as he recovered, making 16 starts around a two-month stint on the Injured List. Buehler struggled in those outings, posting a 5.38 ERA and a 1.553 WHiP in his 75.1 innings, striking out 64 batters with 28 walks.

Buehler’s struggles in 2024 have not limited his market. Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported that the Mets are interested in the former Dodger. Jon Morosi from MLB Network listed the Braves, Cubs and Yankees as potential landing spots. The Athletics also showed interest but Buehler reportedly said he has no desire to play in West Sacramento.

An extensive market for Buehler makes sense. He is likely to command a short-term contract, looking to prove himself before returning to free agency in search of a significant payday. He would be a bargain if he could return to the form he showed between 2018-21. Buehler is a gamble worth taking.
