The Kansas City Chiefs could be getting a big boost to their offense before the end of the regular season.
Wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown has reportedly received his final clearance to return to practice, which could pave the way for him to be back in the lineup before the end of the regular season.
The Chiefs signed Brown in free agency this past offseason in the hopes that he could strengthen a wide receiver room that was the clear Achilles’ heel on the 2023 team. Unfortunately for Brown and the Chiefs, he was injured on his first preseason snap and has been sidelined ever since.
He spent the 2023 season playing for the Arizona Cardinals, catching 51 passes for 574 yards and four touchdowns.
The Chiefs were hoping he could team up with second-year wide receiver Rashee Rice and rookie Xavier Worthy to build a more formidable wide receiver depth chart that would not be such a weakness.
But Brown has yet to play due to injury, while Rice was injured in the Chiefs’ fourth game and is out for the season. That has left Worthy with a significantly bigger role than he was probably expecting when he was drafted with the 28th overall pick.
The Chiefs also added DeAndre Hopkins before the trade deadline to add more depth. Tight end Travis Kelce is leading the Chiefs with 80 receptions, while nobody else on the team has more than 38.
Despite the lack of production from the wide receiver position, the Chiefs are still 12-1 and in the top spot in the AFC standings. Their offense is not even close to what it has been in recent seasons, while they are winning a lot of games in improbable ways with some good luck on their side.
It remains to be seen when Brown will take to the field and what he can do, but the potential of him returning and making any sort of impact is certainly a positive development for the Chiefs offense.
